A river trip is one of the best ways to explore a typical cross section of the country’s natural as well as ethno cultural heritage. The river is regarded as a form of goddess and used for the purpose of various religious rituals such as cremation under both Hinduism and Buddhism. A variety of cultural activities can be witnessed being performed harbor dense vegetation’s and interesting wildlife.
The best rafting season is fall; the rivers are excitingly high in October, a little milder and cooler in November winter trips are possible though a bit chilly. March and April is the second best season, with lower water levels have dropped have to portage some stretches. A monsoon trip is limited to the tamest river.
NEPAL’S RIVER SYSTEM
Nepalese river can be grouped into three categories on the basis of their origin:
- Antecedent to Himalaya
- After the Mahabharat
- After the Churia range
Antecedent River belongs to the period prior to the rise of the Himalaya. This river added their tributaries during of monsoon climate. After the formation of Mahabharat hills. The antecedent river changed their courses as Mahabharat stood as a barrier. As a result, most of the rivers these rivers were responsible to deposit the sediments in the Churia basin.
The following rivers are in use for rafting
- Saptakoshi river stystem (East Nepal)
- Narayani/Saptagandaki river system (Central Nepal)
- Karnali rivers system (West Nepal)
Eight rivers in the three river systems are open for tourists for river rafting. The rivers are the Trishuli, the Kaligandaki, the Bheri, the Seti, the Sunkoshi, Karnali, Tamakoshi and the Arun.
RAFTING PERMIT
Rafting permit is not required in general except to the restricted areas as specified by the government (Subject to change as per Govt. regulation)
CLOTHING AND PERSONAL ITEMS
During autumn (mid-September through November) and spring (March to June)
T-Shirt, Short or light cotton trousers, lights wool sweater, Tennis shoes/sandals to wear in the camp at night or when the Tennis shoes are wet; Swimsuit Sun hat, Sun goggles with string, Suntan lotion. Warm jacket, Windproof/Waterproof trousers. Personal medical supplies. Complete change of clothes including shoes etc.
During winter (December through February)
-T shirt, Warm Short, light cotton trousers, heavy woolen sweater, Wind proof jacket and trousers, Tennis shoes/sneakers, Sun hat, Sun goggles with strings, Suntan lotion. Complete change of clothes includes shoes etc.
Note:
- The camping spot is subject to change depending on the water level of the river.
- Rapids graded: one being the easiest and ten the most difficult and technical.
- Technical rapid is one which needs almost skill, maneuverability and co-ordination.
